The city of Miami is a place unlike any other in the world with its unique combination of international flare that continually shines through in Miami's restaurants, shopping, nightlife and culture. Often referred to as the "Gateway to the Americas," Miami is home to people of many different nationalities, most predominantly those of Latin decent. According to a 2000 Census report, 60% of people living in Miami were Hispanic and over 60% of the total population spoke Spanish as their first language. This beautiful blend of Hispanic cultures and traditions has lent a helping hand in creating the city of Miami into a major entertainment mecca that is world-renowned.
Miami, the seventh largest metropolitan area in the United States, is slightly smaller in area than Boston, with roughly 35 miles of land and 18 miles of water. This translates to lots of exciting venues packed along the beautiful Atlantic coastline, with your next great adventure never far out of reach.
Experience some of the areas best restaurants, many of which boast the Floribean cuisine inspired by the cultural melting pot, next to some of the most eclectic shopping venues, and then walk a little farther to discover countless area attractions. Perhaps you'll find yourself amid Coconut Grove, an area home to several dining and shopping options along with the historic Coconut Grove Playhouse, a South Florida landmark. Head over to Coral Gables and you'll find much of the same variety as Coconut Grove, but with Miracle Mile and the University of Miami in addition. Little Havana is another distinct area of Miami, home to a large number of Cubans and the annual Calle Ocho street festival. If you're lucky enough and planned your vacation between August and September, you can enjoy the Miami Spice Restaurant Month which features hundreds of samples and savings from some of the best eateries in the area.
Although all these areas are significantly popular, South Beach's vibrant scene is probably what comes to mind when you think of Miami. The beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise seas bordered by innumerable establishments ranging from outdoor cafes and restaurants to stores to hotels to bars to nightclubs all make up one of the most famous United States television and movie backdrops known to man. The illustrious and nightly neon-illuminated Ocean Drive can be found here, leading millions of tourists and locals to their favorite SoBe destinations. Home to over 150 clubs and other nightlife venues, SoBe is extremely popular and always busy. Also, numerous fashion shoots are held along the streets of South Beach, which makes sense because Miami is the model shoot capital of the United States.
May through October is Festival Season in Miami and visitors can expect to witness and partake in the many activities that occur throughout this celebratory time such as multicultural festivals, film festivals, theatrical performances and fashion shows.
Maybe you want to catch a sporting event while on vacation in Miami. Not a problem. Depending on the season, of course, you will have the chance to catch the 2006 NBA Champions, the Miami Heat, play in the American Airlines Arena. For the football fanatics and baseball lovers, the Miami Dolphins and the Florida Marlins both play home games at Dolphin Stadium. College-crazed football mania is what can be expected from the University of Miami's Hurricanes, who play at the famous Orange Bowl Stadium.
Often referred to as the "Sun and Fun Capital", Miami offers many recreational activities that range beyond the expected beach-oriented areas. Arguably the most famous of them all is the Everglades National Park, representing 20% of the original wetland area. Schedule an airboat tour to see the area and it's inhabitants in all their glory. The Miami MetroZoo and the Miami Seaquarium are among the best in their leagues, which easily explains why millions of people travel to the area for a chance to explore their jaw-dropping exhibits.
Check out the Port of Miami on your visit, also known as the "Cruise Capital of the World," and make a stop by the Freedom Tower for a better understanding of the citizens in Miami. It serves as a memorial to Cuban immigration to the United States and houses an impressive collection of literature and a fully stock museum, as well as a meeting hall.
These are just a few highlights of the multifaceted city and surrounding areas of Miami. For a truly unique, exciting and all-inclusive destination, choose Miami as your next vacation getaway. You really do have to be there to believe it!
